A guide to glazed extension lighting

Posted on 24.05.2021

If you have a glazed extension, you have the benefit of having an extra open space which can be flooded with natural light. During the day, there’s no need to worry about the room not being light enough. However, the level of light will depend on when the sun is shining. Whilst lighting isn’t always needed, you want to get the most out of your glazed extension. Take into consideration some of our bright ideas for when the sun goes down so that you can make the most of your space 24 hours a day!

Low level lighting

Wherever there’s a socket, a lamp can be placed nearby. Providing a versatile option for your glazed extension, floor and table lamps come in all shapes, styles and sizes so you can choose the right one to complement the aesthetic of your interior. They can be subtle and understated, blending into your décor, or you could create a focal point in the room with a striking design.

Rooflights

Our Skypod roof lanterns are an impeccable way to add light to your existing flat roof or when building a new glazed extension. Create a ceiling of glass to allow endless amounts of light shine down into your home. The slim sightlines allow even more daylight to your living space, so you can enjoy the sunlight all year round, along with the option of a two bar design available up to 1500mm by 7450mm, or a three bar design available up to 2750mm by 8700mm, so you can choose the perfect style for your glazed extension.

Recessed downlights

Illuminate the interior of your glazed extension with downlights. These can be installed into the plasterwork of your glazed extension if it has a plastered perimeter ceiling. Opting for halogen bulbs will give your downlights a bright, yet atmospheric light, creating the perfect mood for when you get home from work and need a place to wind down.

Mounted wall lights

Usually, your glazed extension will have at least one solid wall that you can make use of for your lighting. Wall lights can easily be mounted where your extension connects to your home. A great spot to place your wall lights are near seating areas, where you can relax on a dark evening, perhaps reading a book or watching the TV.

Bi-fold doors

Open up your glazed extension to let in more light. With our bi-fold doors you can create a spectacular opening to your garden thanks to the concertina style opening. Bi-fold doors can be used wherever you have a large exterior wall on your glazed extension, letting in an immense amount of natural light that creates the illusion of an even larger open space.

Sliding doors

Similar to bi-fold doors, our sliding doors bring your glazed extension more light and space with virtually uninterrupted views and a large opening. Adding the panoramic glazed doors to your property, you can frame your view with these large glazed areas that provide a light flooded living space. With air lift and slide doors, that are 2.5 metres wide and 2.7 metres high, you can create a wall of glass, so you won’t need to think about using any artificial light until much later on in the day.

Central fanlight

A popular choice for glazed extension lighting are central fanlights. Providing both brightness and ventilation, they are the perfect choice for a warm, still evening when you want to brighten up your home and keep the house cool. The fan and the light can be operated individually, so in the cooler months, your fanlight can solely lighten up the room, whereas in the summer you have the added bonus of being able to regulate the temperature. This way, you can make use of your glazed extension all year round!

Outdoor lighting

Now that we have covered the interior of your glazed extension, let’s not forget about the exterior. Think outside the box when lighting up your garden. When you’re sat inside your well lit room and it’s dark outside, you tend to just be able to see a glare that’s caused by your glazing that act as a mirror. To distract your eyes from the glare, position some garden lights in your flowerbed or along walkways and stairways. This way, you’ll add an extra dimension to your glazed extension’s interior and create an interesting view once the sun has set.
