Top 5 Home Trends for 2020

If you’re planning a new home improvement project for 2020, you’re probably starting to sift through the interiors magazines and search online for the best home trends to create the living space of your dreams in 2020.

There’s plenty of advice out there to take care of the finishing touches. We predict that there will be a shift from the minimalist, monochromatic style that has been such a popular trend to homeowners wanting to include more colour and texture into their homes. Whatever the colour scheme or design trend you’re choosing, we can help you to with the right space to create your interior design magic!

At Bowalker, we have more than 45 years combined experience transforming properties into incredible living spaces that the whole family can enjoy. By incorporating more glass and glazing into your home, you’ll benefit from increased natural light, which has been proven to boost mood and productivity – the more of that we can get at this time of year, the better! Here’s a run down of our top five home improvement trends for 2020 and how they can be incorporated into your project so you can live in your dream home this year.

Home Trend 1: Wide-span glazed doors

A fantastic benefit of wide-span glazed doors is that your home décor changes with the seasons. The view into your garden will become part of your home, so you enjoy lovely reds, oranges and yellows when the leaves fall in Autumn and pretty yellows, blues and greens in Spring when the daffodils and bluebells start to bloom. In Summer, lush green lawns and bright purple and pink flowers become your new ‘wallpaper’ and in Winter, the fresh white crisp of frost or snow gives another look to your home.

If you’re in Brighton or Shoreham-by-Sea and are lucky enough to have a sea view, it’s even better. You can watch the changing views of tides, winter storms and wildlife – who needs Winterwatch on the television, when you can see it all for yourself just outside your door?!

Choose from bifolding doors, lift & slide doors or sliding patio doors to create your natural seasons ‘wallpaper’ wall.

Home Trend 2: Lift & slide doors

Lift & slide doors are a fantastic way to incorporate huge panes of glass into your home’s design. Our aïr 500LS & 600LS lift & slide doors are available with panels up to 2.5 metres wide and 2.7 metres high for a complete sliding glass door. Panels weigh up to 300kg, but can moved using just 2 fingers, thanks to the clever engineering.

They’re becoming even more popular for homes with a view – as there are fewer frame to interrupt the picture outside! Available in lots of different configurations, lift & slide doors are available in single, double or triple track options, which means panes can slide all to the left, all to the right, or both ways – perfect if you need a dynamic space that can change with your lifestyle.

Home Trend 3: Bifold doors

Bifold doors have been a really popular trend with homeowners for the last few years, as they are the perfect choice for merging indoor and outdoor spaces. This is great if you’ve got plenty of BBQs and garden parties planned for Summer 2020! Bifolds completely fold away to open up your space and extend you kitchen or living area outdoors.

Whilst anthracite Grey, White & Black are classic choices, you could take your pick from the RAL colour chart and make a real feature of your bifolds. Signal Red would look great in a monochrome kitchen. Light Blue is a great match for blue skies outside. Or, if you’re want to be bang on trend for 2020, why not go for Classic Blue, the Pantone colour of the year for 2020!

Home Trend 4: Roof lanterns

Take your project to dizzying new heights with a Skypod roof lantern. Not only are they popular for bringing light into the middle of rooms, they also add height to a room, giving the illusion of more space than is actually there. That’s perfect if you’re limited on how far you can extend out into the garden.

Our Skypods are available in a full range of sizes and designs, with plenty of colour options that can match or contrast with the other glazing in your home. You can also choose from coloured glass options including Blue, Neutral, Bronze and Aqua as well as Clear.

Home Trend 5: A new front door

There’s no quicker or easier way to upgrade the kerb appeal of your home than fitting a new front door! Composite doors remain the top choice for homeowners, as they offer better strength, security and energy efficiency as well as incredible design options. We have two ranges to choose from – Solidor and Bowalker composite doors.

Solidor

Solidor is one of the best-known brands on the market. Their composite doors feature a 48mm thick solid timber core, for top energy efficiency. They also offer some fantastic design options, including the new Contemporary collection, which have an aluminium-look finish to suite with aluminium bi-folding and lift & slide doors.

Bowalker Composite Doors

Bowalker composite doors use a combination of PVCu, timber, insulating foam and GRP for a durable, secure and great looking entrance door. The GRP skins are moulded to give an authentic timber look, without any of the maintenance. Choose from 15 door styles and a range of hardware and glass designs.

New Year, New Project

Christmas is the perfect time to start planning your 2020 home transformation, and the best way to add more space and light to your home next year, is to incorporate architectural glazing such as sliding aluminium doors, bi-folding doors and roof lanterns to your home.

Let in the light

The trend for increasing the amount of glass into architectural designs comes from architects and designers looking for innovative ways to bring more natural light into homes. This time of year is when we really notice how much we miss the daylight – when we’re going to work and coming home in the dark. Over the festive season, it can really become apparent how much our homes are lacking natural daylight – even when the winter sun is shining, it’s not making it’s way inside to lighten our mood.

That’s why sliding aluminium doors and bifolding doors aren’t just for summer – they’re for life! Even on the coldest, winter days, large expanses of glass drink in the maximum amount of daylight, for lighter, brighter living spaces that the whole family can enjoy.

Making spaces

The festive season usually make us realise something else about our homes too – we need more space! With big family dinners, distant relatives staying over and all those presents, it can get a little cramped. We understand your pain! But, why not make Christmas 2020 a little bit different?

Extending your kitchen, dining room or living area is a great way to increase the space you have at home for the family to enjoy. If you’re thinking about an extension, make sure you include roof lanterns and wide-span glazed doors into your design, so that your space maximises natural light.

Another option is creating space outside, away from the house! We’ve worked on plenty of projects where homeowners have decided to create a garden room as a study, playroom or studio and get the extra space the family needs. Installing a sliding aluminium door or a bifold door on the front can create a lovely summerhouse where you can enjoy the garden from too!

The time is now

Now is the time to start planning your 2020 home improvement project.

Imagine having a new dining room ready for Spring, where you can sit and enjoy the garden when the weather changes and the flowers start to bud. Think about next Summer, opening up your living space to the garden by removing the whole wall of glass created by our aluminium bifold doors. Plan the bonfire party you can have, where friends and family can watch the fireworks from the warmth of your new garden room. Envisage Christmas 2020 with a huge new kitchen and plenty of space for the whole family to gather and enjoy the festivities.

Sliding aluminium doors

For extensions, there’s nothing quite like having a sliding aluminium door to glide open, straight out onto a patio or decked area. The huge expanses of glass create the illusion of a removeable glass wall, so you can enjoy the view of your garden, whatever the weather.

For a truly panoramic view, try our aïr 500LS & 600LS lift and slide doors. They feature some of the slimmest sightlines on the market for less frame and more glass – perfect for bringing extra light into your kitchen and living area.

Roof lanterns

Even the darkest spaces in your home can be brightened with a Skypod roof lantern! They’re perfect for orangery-style extensions, or to bring light into the middle of a room that’s being extended out. Pitched designs also add extra height to the room, so your new space will feel even bigger – and they’re perfect for stargazing on a clear night too!

Available in a range of colour finishes, Skypod roof lanterns can be easily matched to your sliding aluminium door or bifolding door, for consistent aesthetics in your new space.

Aluminium bifolding doors

Aluminium bifolding doors are another great way to add style to your new dream home. When opened, they can be stacked to the left, right, or both sides to create a clear opening into the garden. They’re ideal if you enjoy family BBQs and Summer parties that span across the kitchen, dining room and garden!

They’re also a good option if you’re creating a glazed extension that you don’t want to be permanently merged with the rest of your downstairs living space. Choose bifolds to separate your new orangery, conservatory or glazed extension from the rest of the house and just open them up when you need them.
